The word Jaguar comes from the indigenous word “yaguar,” which means “he who kills with one blow.” Jaguars are revered by the indigenous peoples of the Americas and play a large role in their mythology. The Mayans believed that at night the sun transformed into a jaguar and was one of the rulers of the Underworld. Jaguars were seen as a symbol of strength, courage, and spiritual power with the ability to see at night and to look into the dark parts of the human heart. The Aztecs associated jaguars with royalty, war, and magical power and formed an elite warrior class known as the Jaguar warrior.
