Jaguars are apex predators and are considered by many to be a keystone species, controlling populations of certain herbivores and thus supporting the integrity of the forest systems. Jaguars prefer prey weighing 99-187 pounds, especially capybara and giant anteater. In floodplains like the Pantanal, they will also feed on turtles and caimans and anything else they can catch.
