In 1986, the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary in Belize was established as the first protected area for jaguars.  In 1999 field scientists from 18 countries determined 51 Jaguar Conservation Units, which are areas each large enough to support at least 50 breeding jaguars.  These Units are in countries ranging from Mexico to Argentina and Brazil.
