Also known as the White Heron, the Great Egret is one of the world’s most widely distributed wading birds. It is a common sight in the Pantanal where it is the second-largest heron species. During the breeding season, they have long delicate ornamental plumage, seen here. This beautiful plumage was in great demand for ladies’ hats during the late 19th century and led to the bird’s near extinction in North America.
