The Variable Thorny Oyster is a genus of bivalve mollusk found in the Indo-Pacific. The two halves of their shells are connected through a ball-and-socket type hinge, with the bottom half cemented to substrate. They have numerous eyes lining their mantles which detect changes in light and motion, triggering the shell to close.
