Giant clams, the largest living bivalve mollusks, are the most endangered clam species. They can live over 100 years and grow to four feet across and over 400 pounds. The mantle border is covered with hundreds of eyespots containing photoreceptors which cause the mantle to withdraw and the shell to partially close when detecting dimming light or movement.
